The 2014 Hollister Motorcycle Rally was just as great as I expected it to be. It was my fourteenth rally as owner of Johnny’s Bar & Grill and my nineteenth Fourth of July weekend. Even during the non-rally years, Independence weekend has been a time of celebration at Johnny’s. However, the rally brings the entire town of Hollister financial benefits that no other event can match. Hotels, gas stations, liquor stores, and grocery stores are delighted with the influx of business. Many non-profits as well as churches find great opportunities to add funds to their coffers. It is a win-win for San Benito County as well as Santa Clara and Monterey Counties whose hotels, motels, and gas stations reaped the benefits.

Mark Cresswell and the Hollister Downtown Association put on a heck of a rally. Organizing an event the magnitude of our rally can only be called daunting. Just preparing my little bar and grill for the event is a huge job. I had thirty extra employees. We sold more food in four days than we did in the entire month of June. The problematic beer trailer from my distributer was more of a glorified ice chest, but with more than 3500 pounds of ice from my pal, John, from the Damm Good Water Company of Hollister, the beer was always frosty.

We had visitors from all over the world and I’d venture to guess that tens of thousands of photos were taken in front of the Johnny’s mural. Everyone enjoyed the friendly atmosphere that was, once again, exemplified by law enforcement.

I’m thrilled to say that we did not have any altercations at Johnny’s. The report of the shooting Sunday deeply saddened me, especially because my beloved Boozefighters were involved. The Boozefighter Motorcycle Club has been coming to Johnny’s since 1947. I have had the privilege of welcoming them for nineteen years and not once has there been an altercation involving them and another club.

They have shared Johnny’s with more motorcycle clubs than I could begin to count and there has never been a problem. They are always generous and considerate. I have been an honored guest at seven of their National Conventions and never even heard the word rivalry. For me the Boozefighters really are a great bunch, whose company I enjoy.
a great club
What happened was certainly a terrible occurrence. It was however an isolated event and should not shed a bad light on our rally. I admit to being partial where the Boozefighters are concerned. It was three of their club members that went to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The conclusions that I have come to regarding the incident do not change my opinion or affection for them as a club. They played an important part in Johnny’s history and I still consider them friends.

With the rally back in full swing I don’t have a lot of time to visit with people anymore. We started getting busy at Johnny’s on Wednesday and didn’t slow down until Sunday. With the rally becoming a three day event we weren’t sure how busy we would be on Sunday . It was steady, but not so busy that I couldn’t enjoy a little unwinding time with some wonderful customers. We refer to it as “Fun Day Sunday” and it is always full of rally stories and lots of laughter.

We heard lots of positive comments about the rally and a couple of good suggestions. I appreciate Mark Cresswell and all of his hard work but I disagree about not having an event guide. It is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for the rally from paid advertisers and people love having them as souvenirs. I’ll bet the Downtown Association could put together a fantastic program that I would proudly be a part of. Photo towers would also be a great addition next year. Worldwide Dynamics and the Hollister Downtown Association are committed to making ours the best rally in the nation and I am sure that it will only get better. Thank you Mark, Brenda and all of your team members for all of your hard work, it paid off in spades. Thank you Chief Dave Westrick. Your commitment to a peaceful event and your team building character is just what Hollister needed.

A huge thank you goes out to my wonderful team. Without the support of a lot of really great people I would never make it through the motorcycle rally. Thanks once again to all of the beautiful people who made the rally such a successful event. We enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you again next year.

I have been coming since 2002 from southern Oregon with a close friend and absolutely love this rally. I have yet to not have a good time and always enjoy going to Johnny’s for a cold beer and good company. Please keep up the good work this is truly one of the best rallies around! Thank You!
